Marijuauna

Title:Botanical Name:Cannavis Sativa, Bhang or Ganja(Nepal)


Purpose
:

The leaves are beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery. Two grams of dried leaves can be taken with sugar and black pepper.
The leaves help in insomnia. They can be administered to induce sleep where opium cannot be used. Charas which is the active principle of hemp, as well as ganja, are effective drugs to introduce deep sleep.
Bhang or hashish is considered useful in digestive disorders like dyspepsia and other bowel complaints. It also acts as an appetizer when taken in small doses.
Charas is of great value in periodical headaches, migraine, acute mania, insanity and delirium, nervous vomiting, nervous exhaustion, convulsions and neuralgia.
The seeds of the plant are not narcotic. Their infusion is useful in gonorrhoea. Bhang or hashish can also be taken in this disorder.
The juice of Nepali hemp removes dandruff and head lice.
A paste of the fresh leaves is the useful in resolving tumours. The powder of the leaves serves as a useful dressing for wounds and sores. Ganja is externally applied to relieve pain in itchy skin diseases.

Radish

Purpose
:

Diuretic, laxative, lothotriptic, antiscorbutic ( a remedy for scurvy) and Appetiser.
Leaf juice is useful for Dysuria ( difficulty of passing urine), closure of urinary passage ( stranguary), acts as stimulant.
Root juice is useful in urinary trouble, piles and stomachache.
Seeds are carminative, expectorant, laxative and found to be effective in increasing information and excretion.

Heena

Title:Botanical Name:Lawsonia inermis,Mehndi(Nepal)


Purpose
:

It is Aromatic, antifungal, anti-bacterial, coolant and astringent.
Leaves paste is applied as a prophylactic against skin diseases. The paste of leaves is used in headache, joint pain, sleeplessness, diarrhea, jaundice, heart diseases, fever and burning sensation in feet. Powder is used on boils and burns. Decoction of leaves, if gargle, is useful in sore throat. It is natural hair dye.

Banyan Tree

Title:Botanical Name:Ficus bengalensis, Bar(Nepal)


Purpose
:

The bark is tonic, astringent and cooling. The seeds are also considered as cooling and tonic.

The banyan has many medicinal properties. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of several ailments. The bark and leaf buds of the tree are useful in arresting secretion or bleeding. The fruit exercises a soothing effect on the skin and mucous membranes, alleviates swelling ad pain, and serve as a mild purgative. It is also nutritious.

Diarrhoea and dysentery:
The leaf buds of the banyan tree are beneficial in the treatment of chronic diarrhoea and dysentery. The buds should be soaked in water overnight and taken as infusion in the treatment of these diasesae. The latex is also useful in the treatment of diarrhoea and dysentery.

A regular douching of the genital tract with a decoction of the bark of the banyan tree and the fig tree is helpful is helpful in leucorrhoea. A tablespoon each of the powders of the bark of the two trees should be boiled in a litre of water till it is reduced to about half. Douching with the lukewarm decoction will keep the tissues of virginal tract healthy.

Those who do not wear socks and shoes suffer from cracking of heels, a condition known as kibes. The best way to deal with this condition is to fill the cracks with the sap of the banyan tree.

:

Asafoetida has been held in great esteem amongst indigenous medicines from the earlist time in India and Nepal. It is reputed as a drug which expels wind from the stomach and counteracts any spasmodic disorders. It is also a nervine stimulant, digestive agent and a sedative.

Asafoetida is useful in the treatment of respiratory disorders like whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis. About 3to6 centigrams of this gum, mixed with 2 teaspoon of honey, a quarter teaspoon of white anion juice and 1 teaspoon of betel leaf juice, taken thrice daily would keep the patient away from such disorders.

Its minerals and vitamin contents include substantial calcium besides phosphorus, iron, carotene, riboflavin and niacin.

Clove

Title:Botanical Name:Syzygium aromaticum, Lwanga(Nepal)


Purpose
:

The cloves are aromatic, stimulant and carminative. The oil is applied externally over the affected tooth to relieve pain. Chewing of cloves also relieves toothache. For cough, cloves are kept in the mouth, and chewed slowly. Cloves are used in various forms of gastric irritation, dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting. It is also used to correct flatulence and to excite languid digestion. The oil is used as a local analgesic for hypersensitive dentine and carious cavities; a mixture of oil and zinc calx is used as a temporary filling for tooth-cavities. Used externally, the oil is rubefacient and counterirritant; internally, it is carminative and antispasmodic. It is also useful in coughs and other respiratory disorders. It improves the breath and is a popular remedy for sore throat, headaches and coryza.

Nettle

Title:Botanical Name:Urtica Dioica,Allo(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Astringent, diuretic, tonic, hypotensive, pectoral, styptic, rubefacient.

Nettles strengthen and support the whole body. They are used as a spring tonic and general detoxifying remedy. In some cases of rheumatism and arthritis they can be astoundingly successful. They are a specific in cases of childhood eczema and beneficial in all the varieties of this condition, especially in nervous eczema. Also useful for nose bleeds or to relieve the symptoms wherever there is hemorrhage in the body, for example in uterine hemorrhage.

Traditional herbalists believed that nettle tea is a great hair tonic and will bring back the natural color of the hair. The leaves are excellent blood purifier.

Combinations : Nettles will combine well with Figwort and Burdock in the treatment of eczema.

Cardamom

Title:Botanical Name: Elettaria cardamomum, Allaichi(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Cardamom is chewed slowly to sweeten the breath, as aphrodisiac, to soothe digestion, stimulate the appetite, used against flatulence, colic and disorders of the body, often combined with purgatives to offset griping.
It is also reported to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cardiotonic properties. In medicine, it is used as an adjuvant to carminative drugs. It is used as an aromatic stimulant, carminative and flavoring agent.

Digestive disorders:
Cardamom reduces the air and water elements, increases appetite and soothes the mucous membrane. It relieves gas and heart burn caused by garlic and onion. Ground cardamom seed mixed with ginger, cloves and coriander, is an effective remedy for indigestion. A tea made from cardamom is valuable in headache caused by indigesion.

Genito-urinary disorders:
Its powdered seeds mixed with a tablespoon of banana leaf and Amala juice taken thrice a day, will serve as an excellent diuretic for the treatment of gonorrhoea, cystits, nephritis, burning micturation or urination and scanty urination.

Depression:
Powdered seeds of cardamom are boiled in water with tea. It gives a very pleasing aroma to the tea. This can be used as a remedy in the treatment of depression.

Impotency:
The herb is useful in sexual dysfunctions like impotency and premature ejaculation. A pinch of powdered cardamom seeds boiled in milk and sweetened with honey every night would yield excellent results. Excessive use of cardamom at times may lead to impotency.

Oral disorders:
Gargling with an infusion of cardamom and cinnamon cures pharyngitis, sore throat, relaxes uvula, or the fleshy conical portion at the back of the tongue, and hoarseness during the infective stage of influenza. Its daily gargle protects one form the flu.

Cumin

Title:Botanical Name:Cuminum cyminum,Jeera(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Digestive disorders:
Cumin seeds are very useful in digestive disorders like biliousness, morning sickness, indigestion, atonic dyspepsia, diarrhoea, malabsorption syndrome, and flatulent colic. One teaspoon of cumin seeds is boiled in a glass of water and the decoction mixed with one teaspoon of fresh coriander leaf juice and pinch of salt. This decoction can be taken twice daily after meals as a medicine for diarrhoea.

Piles: 
Black cumin is beneficial in the treatment of piles. About 60 grams of the seeds, of which half should be roasted, should be ground together. Three grams of this flour should be taken with water.

Insomnia:
Cumin is valuable in relieving sleeplessness. A teaspoon of the fried powder of cumin seeds mixed with the pulp of a ripe banana can be taken at night to induce sleep.

Renal colic:
Black cumin seeds mixed with caraway seeds and black salt is useful in renal colic. About 20 grams of cumin seeds, 12 grams of caraway seeds and 6 grams of black salt are ground together and mixed with a little vinegar. This mixture can be taken in doses of 3 grams every hour till relief is obtained.

Common cold:
Dilute cumin water is an antiseptic beverage and very useful in common cold and fevers. To prepare cumin water, a teaspoon of cumin is added to boiling water, which is allowed to simmer for a few seconds and set aside to cool. If the cold is associated with sore throat, a few small pieces of dry ginger should be added to the water. It soothes throat irritation.

Problem of Milk Secretion:
A decoction of cumin seeds/ Jeera mixed with milk and honey, taken once daily during the entire period of pregnancy helps the healthy development of the foetus, cases child-birth and increases the secretion of breast milk.

Amnesia:
Cumin seeds are valuable in amnesia or dullness of memory. Three grams of black cumin seeds are mixed with 12 grams of pure honey and licked.

Boils:
Black cumin ground in water is applied as a paste over the boils with beneficial results.

Scorpion sting:
Paste of the cumin seeds prepared with onion juice, applied over scorpion sting will retard the frequency of upbeats.
