Asafoetida

Purpose
:

Asafoetida has been held in great esteem amongst indigenous medicines from the earlist time in India and Nepal. It is reputed as a drug which expels wind from the stomach and counteracts any spasmodic disorders. It is also a nervine stimulant, digestive agent and a sedative.

Asafoetida is useful in the treatment of respiratory disorders like whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis. About 3to6 centigrams of this gum, mixed with 2 teaspoon of honey, a quarter teaspoon of white anion juice and 1 teaspoon of betel leaf juice, taken thrice daily would keep the patient away from such disorders.

Its minerals and vitamin contents include substantial calcium besides phosphorus, iron, carotene, riboflavin and niacin.

Clove

Title:Botanical Name:Syzygium aromaticum, Lwanga(Nepal)


Purpose
:

The cloves are aromatic, stimulant and carminative. The oil is applied externally over the affected tooth to relieve pain. Chewing of cloves also relieves toothache. For cough, cloves are kept in the mouth, and chewed slowly. Cloves are used in various forms of gastric irritation, dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting. It is also used to correct flatulence and to excite languid digestion. The oil is used as a local analgesic for hypersensitive dentine and carious cavities; a mixture of oil and zinc calx is used as a temporary filling for tooth-cavities. Used externally, the oil is rubefacient and counterirritant; internally, it is carminative and antispasmodic. It is also useful in coughs and other respiratory disorders. It improves the breath and is a popular remedy for sore throat, headaches and coryza.

Nettle

Title:Botanical Name:Urtica Dioica,Allo(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Astringent, diuretic, tonic, hypotensive, pectoral, styptic, rubefacient.

Nettles strengthen and support the whole body. They are used as a spring tonic and general detoxifying remedy. In some cases of rheumatism and arthritis they can be astoundingly successful. They are a specific in cases of childhood eczema and beneficial in all the varieties of this condition, especially in nervous eczema. Also useful for nose bleeds or to relieve the symptoms wherever there is hemorrhage in the body, for example in uterine hemorrhage.

Traditional herbalists believed that nettle tea is a great hair tonic and will bring back the natural color of the hair. The leaves are excellent blood purifier.

Combinations : Nettles will combine well with Figwort and Burdock in the treatment of eczema.

Cardamom

Title:Botanical Name: Elettaria cardamomum, Allaichi(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Cardamom is chewed slowly to sweeten the breath, as aphrodisiac, to soothe digestion, stimulate the appetite, used against flatulence, colic and disorders of the body, often combined with purgatives to offset griping.
It is also reported to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cardiotonic properties. In medicine, it is used as an adjuvant to carminative drugs. It is used as an aromatic stimulant, carminative and flavoring agent.

Digestive disorders:
Cardamom reduces the air and water elements, increases appetite and soothes the mucous membrane. It relieves gas and heart burn caused by garlic and onion. Ground cardamom seed mixed with ginger, cloves and coriander, is an effective remedy for indigestion. A tea made from cardamom is valuable in headache caused by indigesion.

Genito-urinary disorders:
Its powdered seeds mixed with a tablespoon of banana leaf and Amala juice taken thrice a day, will serve as an excellent diuretic for the treatment of gonorrhoea, cystits, nephritis, burning micturation or urination and scanty urination.

Depression:
Powdered seeds of cardamom are boiled in water with tea. It gives a very pleasing aroma to the tea. This can be used as a remedy in the treatment of depression.

Impotency:
The herb is useful in sexual dysfunctions like impotency and premature ejaculation. A pinch of powdered cardamom seeds boiled in milk and sweetened with honey every night would yield excellent results. Excessive use of cardamom at times may lead to impotency.

Oral disorders:
Gargling with an infusion of cardamom and cinnamon cures pharyngitis, sore throat, relaxes uvula, or the fleshy conical portion at the back of the tongue, and hoarseness during the infective stage of influenza. Its daily gargle protects one form the flu.

Cumin

Title:Botanical Name:Cuminum cyminum,Jeera(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Digestive disorders:
Cumin seeds are very useful in digestive disorders like biliousness, morning sickness, indigestion, atonic dyspepsia, diarrhoea, malabsorption syndrome, and flatulent colic. One teaspoon of cumin seeds is boiled in a glass of water and the decoction mixed with one teaspoon of fresh coriander leaf juice and pinch of salt. This decoction can be taken twice daily after meals as a medicine for diarrhoea.

Piles: 
Black cumin is beneficial in the treatment of piles. About 60 grams of the seeds, of which half should be roasted, should be ground together. Three grams of this flour should be taken with water.

Insomnia:
Cumin is valuable in relieving sleeplessness. A teaspoon of the fried powder of cumin seeds mixed with the pulp of a ripe banana can be taken at night to induce sleep.

Renal colic:
Black cumin seeds mixed with caraway seeds and black salt is useful in renal colic. About 20 grams of cumin seeds, 12 grams of caraway seeds and 6 grams of black salt are ground together and mixed with a little vinegar. This mixture can be taken in doses of 3 grams every hour till relief is obtained.

Common cold:
Dilute cumin water is an antiseptic beverage and very useful in common cold and fevers. To prepare cumin water, a teaspoon of cumin is added to boiling water, which is allowed to simmer for a few seconds and set aside to cool. If the cold is associated with sore throat, a few small pieces of dry ginger should be added to the water. It soothes throat irritation.

Problem of Milk Secretion:
A decoction of cumin seeds/ Jeera mixed with milk and honey, taken once daily during the entire period of pregnancy helps the healthy development of the foetus, cases child-birth and increases the secretion of breast milk.

Amnesia:
Cumin seeds are valuable in amnesia or dullness of memory. Three grams of black cumin seeds are mixed with 12 grams of pure honey and licked.

Boils:
Black cumin ground in water is applied as a paste over the boils with beneficial results.

Scorpion sting:
Paste of the cumin seeds prepared with onion juice, applied over scorpion sting will retard the frequency of upbeats.

Marrango tree

Purpose
:

Healing power:
Neem tree is generally considered to be an air purifier and preventive against malarial fever and cholera .All parts of the tree possess medicinal properties. The leaves are useful in relieving flatulence, promoting the removal of catarrhal matter and phlegm from the bronchial tubes, and in increasing secretion and discharge of urine. They also acts act as an insecticide. The bark is a bitter tonic and a stimulant .It arrests secretion and bleeding besides counter acting any spasmodic disorders.

Malaria:
An infusion or a decoction of the fresh leaves is a bitter vegetable tonic and alternative, especially in chronic malarial fevers because of its action on the liver.

Piles:
It is very effective in piles.

Eczema:
The bark of the babul tree is used in the treatment of eczema.

Leprosy:
Te sap of the neem tree has been found effective in leprosy. Simultaneously the patient’s body should be massaged with the sap.

Skin Disorder:
The leaves applied externally are very useful in skin disease. They are especially beneficial in the treatment of boils, chronic ulcers, eruptions of small pox, swelling and wounds. They can be used either. An ointment prepared from neem leaves is very effective in healing ulcers and wounds.

Hair Disorder:
If there is any hair loss or it has ceased to grow, washing with the decoction of neem leaves may help. This will not only stop hair from falling but also help their growth. Frequent application of neem oil also destroys insects in the hair.

Epiphora:
The leaves are beneficial in treating epiphora- that is watering of the eyes, in which tears flow onto the cheeks due to abnormality of the tear drainages system. The eyelids should be painted morning and evening with this liquid.

Oral Disorder:
Cleaning the teeth regularly with a neem twig prevents gum diseases. It firms up loose teeth, relieves toothache, evacuates the bad odour and protects the mouth from various infections.

Neem is very useful at the time of childbirth. Administration of the juice of neem leaves to the woman in labour before child birth produces normal contraction in the uterus and prevents possible inflammation .It corrects bowls movements and checks onset of fevers, thereby facilitating the normal delivery. The use of tepid decoction of neem leaves as a vaginal douche heals any wounds caused during delivery and disinfects the vaginal passage. Neem is also a powerful insecticide to kill soil nematodes and other plant parasites and is useful as mosquito repellant. And neem juice is used in toothpastes and contraceptives.

Fenugreek

Title:Botanical Name:Trigonella Foenum Graecum, Methi(Nepal)


Purpose
:

Parts used: Whole plant, seed

Digestive disorders:
Leaves are beneficial in the treatment of indigestion, flatulence and sluggish live. Boiled and fried in butter, they alleviate biliousness. The seeds are also useful in the treatment of colic, flatulence, dysentery, diarrhoea and dyspepsia.

Anaemia:
The leaves help in blood formation. The cooked leaves help prevent anemia and run down condition in girls, usually associated with the onset of puberty and a sudden spurt on in growth. The seeds also help in recovering from anemia, being rich in iron.

Deadened senses:
The seeds help restore the deadened senses of taste or smell. The sense of taste dulls due to improper functioning of the salivary glands which often become clogged with mucus and accumulated juices, causing swelling. Similarly, the sense of smell is obstructed due to prolonged accumulations of mucus and other impurities in the nose where the olfactory nerves which is the special nerve of smell.

Fever:
Tea made from fenugreek seeds is equal in value to quinine in reducing fevers. It is particularly valuable as a cleansing and soothing drink. Seeds, when moistened with water become slightly mucilaginous, and hence the tea make from with them has the power to dissolve sticky substance like mucus.

Stomach disorders:
This tea soothes inflamed stomach and intestines, cleansing the stomach, bowels, kidney and respiratory tract of excess mucus. It is beneficial in the healing of peptic ulcers, as the mild coating of mucilaginous matter deposited by fenugreek provides a protective layer for the ulcers, when it passes through the stomach and intestines.

Respiratory infections:
During the early stages of any of the respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, influenza, sinusitis, catarrh and suspected pneumonia, fenugreek tea helps the body to perspire, dispel toxicity and shorten the gestation period of fever. During the treatment, no other food or nourishment should be taken, as fasting aids the body to correct these respiratory problems in a few days.

Bad breath and body odour:
The tea is also beneficial in bad breath and body odour. Unpleasant odours emanate from the body due to accumulations of hardened mucus and other toxins in the nasal and oral passages, the gastrointestinal tract, the urinary tract, the blood and the vigina. The tea taken regularly helps to remove these accumulations from these spots where mouthwash and soap can never penetrate.
According to Lelord Kordel, one of the world’s most famous nutritionist, ” so potent are the volatile oils in fenugreek and so thorough a job of cleansing do they perform, that often a decided fragrance of fenugreek seeds emanates from the pores of a person using the herb regularly. These oils seek out and penetrate the most remote crevices and creases of the membranous linings within the body cavities. The volatile oils are absorbed into the cell tissues to do their job of rejuvenating our body. Some of them finally find their way into the sweat glands to cleanse and awaken any sluggishness in these parts.

Diabetes:
Seeds and also be taken for diabetes. The normal does is 2 teaspoonfuls of powdered seeds taken daily in broth or milk. 2 seeds can also be swallowed whole, daily.

Dandruff:
Fenugreek seeds are useful in the removal of dandruff. Two tablespoonfuls of the seeds are soaked overnight in water. In the morning, the softened seeds are ground into a fine paste and applied in the scalp and left on for half an hour. The hair is then washed thoroughly with soapnut (rita nut) solution or Shikakai. A paste of the fresh leaves of fenugreek applied over the scalp regularly before washing the hair also cures dandruff.

Mouth ulcer:
The herb helps in the healing of the mouth ulcers.

Sore throat:
A gargle made from g\fenugreek seeds is best for ordinary sore throat. For the gargle, the solution should be much stronger than the tea. Two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds are put in a liter of water and allowed to simmer for half an hour over a low flame. it is cooled to room temperature and strained. the entire liquied is used as a gargle.

Leucorrhoea:
Fenugreek tea used as a douche is very effective in treating leucorrhoea. The solution is prepare in the same manner as for gargle.

Swellings:
A poultice of the leaves can be applied with advantage in external and internal swellings. It is also useful in burns due to its cooling properties.

Other uses:

Beauty aid:
A paste of the fresh leaves applied over the scalp regularly before taking bath, helps hair while preserving the natural colour and keeping the hair silky. The paste applied on the face every night before going to bed and washed with warm, prevents one from getting pimples, blackheads, and dryness of the face and early appearance of wrinkles. it also improves complexion and makes one look years younger.

Pregnancy and lactation:
The seeds fried on ghee are finely powdered, with wheat flour and sugar to prepare Halwa taken in small quantity daily, this helps in quick normalization after delivery. The seeds, made into agruel, and given to nursing mothers increases the flow of milk.
Steaming is considered the best method of cooking leaves; in this the vitamins are retained and the vegetable becomes palatable. The dried leaves can be compared to pluses for their protein content. They supplement the lysine deficient cereals diets.
